I’m As important as John Chow!

First off, congratulations to the 2007 World Series Champions, the Boston Red Sox. Being from around Boston myself, you really appreciate it. I’m sure that the people who have waited even longer than I have appreciate it even more, and it’s a great thing for them. I’m proud to be from Boston, and proud that this is happening! Can’t wait to go out and get that gear!!!! I’m so pumped right now!!!

ImportantNow onto our favorite topic, Google’s pagerank update. Did everything they do make sense? Let’s check the Page rank of my two biggest blogs, neither of which are huge.

First, Intermission at Work. This is my movie blog. Before the pagerank update, it had a PR of 0. Currently, according to several different tools, it’s at a PR 4. That means that it’s just as important, according to google, as John Chow. :-] That means that I’ve made it big.

Now, this blog. It’s been running for about a month now. Before the pagerank update, it also had a PR of 0. Now, it is currently at a 2. Not bad for only one month of work. I’m sure that others have done better, but I am pretty impressed by this.

Does this make sense? We can compare some of the stats. Intermission at Work has roughly 24 subscribers, and has a Technorati authority of 24. John Chow has over 12,000 subscribers, and is in the top 100 Technorati blogs. Hmmm… doesn’t make too much sense does it. Either Google is wrong, or I’m not making enough money from them. If I rank in the same importance as John Chow, shouldn’t I be making as much money as he is? I think its time for those advertisers to come hit up this blog, and for my adsense earnings to shoot up through the roof. Because I’m as good as John Chow. :-]

So what should we do about this? I think that a lot of the blogs are looking at it as if it doesn’t mean anything. Some of the really huge ones might not have a problem with it. But what about the smaller blogs, and some of the big bloggers who have taken a hit? More Merchant, for example is now a PR 3. He makes an important point that text link ads rely onxa and page rank to determine how much a link will sell for. Using their tools on one of my blogs, the text link that was once worth $3 is now worth $15, just due to PR increase. I don’t sell text link ads, but it makes it more tempting the more that it is worth!

Maybe Google is trying to punish the blogs that sell text link ads, but they must be more consistent about it. Some blogs, such as Problogger, had their PRs returned to the previous value after Google recognized their errors. They may punish me for saying this, but be consistent with it. And stop advertising Text-Link-Ads if you’re going to punish sites for using them.
